The establishment of the Department of Urdu came in the year 1963. Initially, it was started as a General Department. During the course of time, the Urdu Department grew popular for its standard of classes, and subsequently, the Honours courses started in 2001. Known for its activities in diverse fields, the Urdu Department of CGC has been regularly organizing seminars and meetings at both national and international levels in which distinguished Men of Letters around the nation and the world have graced the occasion by their participation and appreciated the endeavor of the Department by their valuable remarks.
The Dept. of Urdu, in collaboration with the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) under the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India has organized many national-level seminars on various new topics which subsequently opened the doors of new thinking and research on them. Moreover, the department has also organized various other programs with the collaboration of the University Grants Commission and West Bengal Urdu Academy.
The Dept. of Urdu, in order to inject the desire of learning and incite creativity in them, has arranged various workshops and literary events to suit their educational needs so that the students of the department don’t confine themselves merely to the bookish knowledge but also explore their abilities.
Many students of the Urdu Department, after completing the course, are now successfully placed in various academic positions in different universities, colleges and schools as well. Some are even acknowledged as promising writers and poetess too.
To encourage the students for better results in their exam, the Dept. of Urdu rewards its toppers in Urdu Major and Urdu General respectively with two different awards.
