INTRODUCTION

The department has been a part of the college since its inception in 1963 and ran Higher Secondary and General courses while Honours course began in 1998.The college also offers Postgraduate Course in English under Directorate of Distance Education, Vidyasagar University.

The department inculcates among its students an interest in exploring knowledge and also relating oneself to the surrounding society. The department aims at promoting academic excellence by incorporating recent developments in academic research and technological innovations in teaching with a close teacher-student contact that has been further intensified through Mentoring. The faculty members analyse the feedback from students to work on the lesson plan, audio-visual teaching aids, students’ programmes like students’ seminars, performances, quiz programmes and self-evaluation exercise.

The major highlights of this department are:

  • In 2021-22 the pass percentage was around 88.46 and progression of students to higher education is 52% and nearly 17% of them have already been placed within September 2022

  • Emphasis on participative and experiential learning of students as
      • they edit and publish departmental magazine Pensées écrites, wall magazine,

      • organize literary events,

      • observe various eco-awareness days like World Environment Day, Yoga Day

      • participate in social awareness programmes

      • participate in seminars and programmes at University, intercollege and intracollege level

      • Observing the departmental day “Autumn Blossoms”

  • Liberal learning atmosphere through interactive learning scientifically planned through
      • teaching plan, lesson plan, reading list, Question Bank

      • Preservation of selected class recordings for students needing remedial attention Regular Class tests and Self-Evaluation for students

      • Effective Mentoring

  • Extending Holistic support to students through:

      • Regular yoga at the beginning of first class

      • Maintaining a ministorage of nourishing food for students coming from far or missing breakfast for some reason

      • Psychological support for any late adolescence crisis

      • Providing interactive platform to combat depression and crisis during lockdown
