INTRODUCTION

In the year 2004 – the Discipline of Economics as Honours course was introduced when Calcutta Girls College was converted from an Evening College to a full-fledged Day College. The vision was to impart degree courses to those young minds who wanted to pursue academics seriously as their profession. The then, the department was headed by Dr. Ruma Bhattacharyya, whose concerted efforts along with the administration helped in the introduction of Honours degree in Economics. Presently Dr. Ruma is the Principal of Bijoy Krishna Girls College, also known as Howrah Girls College. Her 21 years of dedication to our department will remain in our golden archives forever. Objectives : Economics as a discipline is an extremely useful practical based subject for gaining knowlegde as to how any nation functions itself for overall growth and sustainable development vis a vis global perspective. A BSc Gen degree is awarded to students after 6 semester, i.e., 3 yrs, who have Economics as Core Course 1 and Math or/and Statistics as Core Course 2. If the later is a theory based subject then a BA Gen degree is awarded. For being awarded a BSc Major course, requisite qualifications as per Calcutta University guidelines have to be followed. This entails that at plus two level or the higher secondary level exam, the student must score atleast 50% in Economics and 45% in Mathematics or atleast 55% in Mathematics. Having met this requirement the third choice being of any nature would help the student qualify as a BSc Eco Major student. Our department provides all the necessary study materials in the form of College Library take home books and journals including Economic and Political Weekly, departmental library that has collection of Economic Survey of India reports and focussed teaching. All these key features enable student from any background to understand the discipline lucidly. Our students have been equally active in the cultural events as well as inter college quiz competition.
