Anti Ragging Cell

Calcutta Girls’ College has always followed a policy of zero tolerance for incidents of ragging. In our college, we believe in fostering an environment of camaraderie and mentee-mentor between the junior and senior year students. Teachers take active measures to ensure that incidents of verbal, physical, written or psychological harassment of students do not take place. Also, UGC had recommended that the universities, colleges and institutes should form a committee and a separate cell to handle incidents of ragging and also evaluate, assist and support Higher Educational institutes to meet certain requirements which are mandatory in order to create a ragging free environment in educational institutes. To this effect, Calcutta Girls’ College formed the Anti-Ragging Cell to intervene in any such incident.

Ragging has ruined countless innocent lives and careers. In order to eradicate it, the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, in Civil Appeal No. 887 of 2009, passed the judgement wherein guidelines were issued for setting up of a Central Crisis Hotline and Anti-Ragging Database. In accordance with UGC guidelines, the college has institutionalized a robust anti-ragging committee.

How to Define Ragging - UGC, through its 3rd Amendment in Regulations dated 29th June, 2016 has stated that the definition of ragging encompasses, Any act of physical or mental abuse (including bullying and exclusion) targeted at another student (fresher or otherwise) on the ground of colour, race, religion, caste, ethnicity, gender (including transgender), sexual orientation, appearance, nationality, regional origins, linguistic identity, place of birth place or residence or economic background will be termed as ragging.
