The Department of History is one of the constituent Departments of Calcutta Girls' College. Ever since the inception of the college in the year 1963, the Department of History is working hard to impart productive knowledge in the discipline. The Honours Department started in the year 1998.It is one of the largest departments of the college with at present five faculty members specializing in different fields of History. The Department of History runs Undergraduate Courses in History under the Choice-Based CreditSystem (CBCS). As per the syllabus approved by the University of Calcutta,they offer both Core Courses and Generic Elective Courses. The syllabus begins with human evolution and development of world civilization. It gives emphasis on the political, economic , socio- cultural and religious history of ancient, medieval and modern periods of the sub-continent, thereby enriching the students on the variegated mechanism and methodologies for the study of history. Select readings on World History is also a part of the syllabus. The syllabus also gives emphasis on Skill Enhancement Courses(SEC) widening the area of knowledge of the students in related fields of Archaeology, Museology, Heritage Management and Art Appreciation. On the whole, the programme is set to envision and practice the making of knowledge about the rich cultural heritage of our nation and renders a wide scope in different areas of research work. Moreover, the course aims at job opportunities as teachers in schools, colleges and universities and official jobs in different Heritage Institutions, Museums and Archaeological Surveys, of course, besides more regular avenues.
