Education department of Calcutta Girls’ College was started in 1963. At that time only Education General Course was being offered by the said department. In the year 2005, the department initiated to offer HONOURS COURSES IN EDUCATION under the guidelines of The University Of Calcutta. Since then our department is offering two courses such as a) EDUCATION HONOURS and b) EDUCATION GENERAL. This department is responsible for the overall development of the students. The Department follows the curricula as prescribed by the University of Calcutta in the undergraduate stage. Departmental library is well stocked with books (English and Bengali) to equip the students to keep pace with the latest information and knowledge. Students can issue books on any day. Teachers of the department help them to select the appropriate books according to their query. The Department currently has two full-time teachers and one guest teacher. This department strives to generate interest among the students about various aspects of the subject. The students are also encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities. To improve the students’ learning various teaching methods are used through online and offline modes by the experienced teachers of this department. The teachers observe on each student’s weakness and strength in respect of the preparation of the university examination. The students also keep in touch with the department after graduation. In consequence the department has a nice strength of alumni. This department organizes seminars and workshops to ensure the participation of the students in academic activities also organizes parent-teacher meet to know the grievances and suggestions of the parents and for their redressal. The Department invites eminent Speakers from India who contribute to enriching the academic excellence of the department.
The Department of Education runs Undergraduate Honours and General Courses under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) introduced in 2018-19 session. In the syllabi a special importance has also been given on expertise development with Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course. Learning outcomes include expertise in sociological, philosophical, psychological foundations of education, understanding of educational organization, management and planning, proficiency in guidance and counselling, learning about the use of technology in education, basic knowledge of educational research and knowledge of inclusive education. They also become familiar with concepts of human rights education, knowledge regarding educational thought of great educators, teacher education and also concept of gender and society. There is also a special stress on women education and empowerment. There is vast scope for students of this discipline, but it needs hard work and patience. Students can appear for UPSC civil services, other competitive exams, can look for job opportunities in law, IT, banking sectors or opt for further higher education and research or join NGOs. They may also seek jobs in career guidance, education psychology, market and policy research, publishing houses, media, etc. Some of the subject specific job positions are---- community education officer, education administrator, therapists, teaching assistants, museum education officer, career advisors, public relation journalists, etc. The students can have a profound effect on community and society as they are specially trained in life skills. After passing their UG and PG they would be able to apply for teaching jobs in schools, colleges and universities too.
